Caen Longhouse Excavation 8th-23rd June

Volunteer Information (On site facilities)

  • Work at the site will take place from 9.30am till 4.30pm
  • Transport can be arranged to and from the site from Timespan– prior notice required if possible
  • Water
  • A chemical toilet
  • A tent will be erected for shelter, tea breaks and lunches etc
  • Sun lotion and midge repellent (limited supplies)
  • A tent for equipment and finds processing

Volunteer Information (What you need to take)

  • Lunches, snacks and refreshments (especially lots of water)
  • Comfy strong footwear (Also wellies or walking boots depending on weather)
  • Water and windproof jacket and hat (wear layers if possible)
  • Trowel (only if you have one)
  • Sun cream and midge repellent
  • Fold up chairs (some will be supplied)
  • Days off to be confirmed

Directions to the excavation site

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

It is advised that volunteers should leave their cars in the car park opposite the Bridge Hotel and use the available transport at Timespan to get to the site. This will be available at 9.30am and 4.30pm most days. Please ask in advance if you require transport.

If you wish to take your own car to the site please follow these directions from Helmsdale:

  • Take the Strath of Kildonan road from the roundabout at the west end of Dunrobin Street
  • Drive along Golf Road and continue into the Strath of Kildonan
  • Continue driving for a few miles. The road takes a turn to the left and you will see a small white cottage on your right above the road
  • Not long after the cottage you will see a small bridge and burn
  • There is space to park here on both sides of the road
  • Please remember that this parking area is used by people fishing on the river and estate workers
  • Please avoid any obstruction of other vehicles
  • The site can be access by entering the area of land opposite the river using the gate (Please remember to close the gate at all times)
  • Climb up onto the plateau above the burn and walk for 10 minutes and you will see the excavation site in front of you (Some parts can be boggy)
  • Grid Ref for site is ND 0169 1775

  • Guided walks of the excavation site on Saturday 15th & 22nd June at 11am
  • Summer Solstice early evening picnic at Caen on Friday 21st June – book a place now!
  • Visit Timespan and experience the Virtual World of Caen in our museum
  • Artist Carolyn Lefley’s ‘Realm’ currently on exhibition in our gallery
  • Additional events will be advertised locally!
  • The Timespan Cafe serves a delicious selection of homemade soup, sandwiches, and baking!

  1. Hello ! i have reached yous before but could not make it in 2014 altho I will be heading in 2015 yay ! upto Helmsdale where my Granda was born in 1886 in Kildonan. His parents were Worsten Weavers and Ploughmans . A long history and my hero regarding my Granda after he came to Canada in 1909. I am hoping to do some Volunteer work up here if i can ? Please can you let me know I would really Appreciate it ! …….. kind Regards, Elayne Murray.
