Sethembile Msezane

Sethembile Msezane is a South African artist using interdisciplinary practices to create commanding works rich of political and spiritual symbolism. For the first time in Scotland, the artist presents Chapungu- The Day Rhodes Fell (2015) a photograph capturing the artist’s live work/embodiment at the removal of the Cecil John Rhodes statue, a symbol of South African colonial oppression, at the University of Cape Town in 2015. For the occasion, the artist embodied the spirit of the bird called Chapungu, eagle and bringer of good fortune to communities in Shona beliefs. In doing so she antagonised the celebration of white western colonialism by locating her black female body in a memorialised space to reclaim and remember the narratives of black women in South Africa.
