Liberating the Imagination: Palestine 2023-2048
19 to 25 September 2024
Curated by Jeremy Lester
Opening: Thursday, 19th September at 3 pm.
From the 19th to the 25th September

We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Jeremy Lester, curator of Liberating the Imagination, an exhibition featuring drawings by children from the Dheisheh refugee camp in Bethlehem.
Jeremy was not only an academic, psychological therapist, and activist but also a passionate advocate for the transformative power of imagination. In 2024, he spent two months in the Dheisheh camp, working closely with a group of children to explore their visions of the future.
He profoundly understood the philosophical and political potential of imagination as a revolutionary tool. Jeremy spoke about how Palestinian children had been stripped of the space to dream and fantasize about a future free from oppression. Yet, he envisioned a future where this capacity to dream could be restored and nurtured, where art and storytelling could pave a path to liberation.
For Jeremy Lester, to imagine was an act of resistance. Dreaming of new worlds was the first step in building them. He believed that even under occupation, the power of imagination could never be fully extinguished. His work called for the cultivation of this imagination, to break free from the chains of oppression, and to plant seeds of hope for a world where children could dream of stars and futures free of fear.
In his memory, let us continue to honor the liberating power of the imagination through the opening of the exhibition on Thursday 19th September at 3 pm. Timespan will host a special workshop with Helmsdale Primary School on Friday, 20th September. This workshop aims to engage local youth in a dialogue about the role of imagination in envisioning a more just and equitable future, drawing inspiration from the experiences of Palestinian children.

Timespan is pleased to announce the opening of “Liberating the Imagination: Palestine 2023-2048,” an exhibition curated by Jeremy Lester, on Thursday, 19th September at 3 pm.
This exhibition will run until 25th September and will feature a series of drawings created by children from the Dheisheh refugee camp in Bethlehem.
In 2024, Jeremy Lester spent two months in the Dheisheh camp, working closely with a group of children to explore how they envisioned their future. The children were encouraged to liberate their imagination, using art as a medium to imagine a future free from oppression. This collaboration was made possible through the support of Dheisheh’s educational organisation, The Palestinian Youth Action Centre for Community Development.
To complement the exhibition, Timespan will host a special workshop with Helmsdale Primary School on Friday, 20th September. This workshop aims to engage local youth in a dialogue about the role of imagination in envisioning a more just and equitable future, drawing inspiration from the experiences of Palestinian children.
