Coming Home to the Highlands: Bringing back the Legacy and Heritage of Neil Gunn

Saturday 2 May 2026

Book Launch & Writing Workshop
Saturday 2 May, 11am - 2pm

Presented by David Graham and Kirsty Gunn. North House Press

Neil Gunn was a profoundly important writer who was born up along the coast from Helmsdale and lived and wrote in the Highlands for most of his life.

From the time of his first publication, The Grey Coast, 100 years ago in 1926, he was regarded as an important and central writer of not only Scottish, but international reputation, with books published all over the world to great critical acclaim. Now, few people in Scotland, outside this part of Sutherland and Caithness, have even heard of his work, let alone have read him or know of Neil Gunn’s reputation.

That is all about to change.

At this special Centenary Event, created especially for the Timespan Heritage Centre, we will be celebrating the homecoming of this extraordinary writer in a day of presentations, readings and discussion, a creative workshop, a publishing question and answer session, and more.

Join new Sutherland-based David Graham and Kirsty Gunn of North House Press as they reintroduce us to the work of a life-changing literary figure and show how his novels can be used today to help us live more creative and interesting lives, and celebrate everything about the Highland life that we all love.

Bring pens, paper, and be prepared to be transported back to the world of The Grey Coast in an amazing interactive day that will leave you feeling inspired and ready to plunge into the world of Gunn’s novels.
