Mamadou Tall Diedhiou

Mamadou Tall Diedhiou is an artist and poet currently based in the suburb of Dakar, Senegal. In his practice he recuperates waste material to transform it into beautiful bird sculptures full of life and character like The Bird (2008) on display. His inspiration comes from the memory of migrating birds dwelling in his childhood village Nomoune and recalling the impact of sociopolitical events on birds such as the destruction of their nests during the Rebellion War in Casamance. Displaying his work for the first time in the UK, the artist’s bird sculpture in Helmsdale visualises a migratory route that links Senegal to Northern Scotland drawing attention to the recent bird flu outbreak which particularly affected the birds using this pathway including Common Terns, Great Skuas or Gannets.
