J. Drew Lanham

US based ornithologist, and professor of wildlife J. Drew Lanham presents sound recordings of his joyous poems inspired by his professional, collective and personal relationship with the environment and birds. In his practice, the artist focuses on investigating how ethnicity and culture shape the perception of nature and its care. He advocates for the key role African- Americans should play in natural resource conservation, challenging the hegemonic white- centric gaze that historically conceptualised ornithology as a way to exercise control and power over nature. The poems presented in the exhibition include Joy Is The Justice We Give Ourselves initially published in Emergence Magazine. His voice holds a great sense of urgency about the ecological catastrophe to encourage humanity to act swiftly, yet it is a source of empowerment and expresses the utter joy of loving birds as a person of colour.
