In 1823, there is a reference to a parochial school in Helmsdale. As the fishing industry prospered the school roll was over 200 and more space for rooms was desperately required. A new purpose-made building was erected in 1840 to cater for this demand. This school was replaced by the current school in 1955. Kinbrace School, opened in 1883, is the only other school in the Parish. There were also schools at Kildonan, Loth, Portgower. Timespan has a growing collection of school class photos from over the last 100 years. To view many more photographs visit the Timespan Public Archive.
