Clemens Wilhelm has traveled from Berlin to Helmsdale to undertake a three-month residency that takes as its starting point the legacy of Joseph Beuys, following the ARTIST ROOMS exhibition of Beuys’ work at Timespan this summer.
I am delighted, honored and a little intimidated to be invited to a Joseph-Beuys focused artist residency. Delighted because it is such a generous opportunity, honored because I was chosen out of many artists to come to Helmsdale, and intimidated because Joseph Beuys is such a giant figure in art history who seems still very much alive today. His legacy certainly has a huge influence on how I work as an artist today. I love his work for being so political, environmentally concerned, optimistic, life-affirming and open to any medium. His Fluxus-related claims: ‘life is art’ and ‘everybody is an artist’ – though often misinterpreted – have shaken up the art world, and have made new forms of art practice possible. Beuys‘ energetic lectures still seem very contemporary and are full of humour. His courage and devotion to art are very contagious.
On the 24 October, we look forward to sharing a further work by Clemens, The Road to Venice, with a special screening event with live musical soundtrack composed and performed by Norwegian artist Joakim Blattmann.
We will also host an iteration of Greener on the Other Side on the 17 October, a traveling video art festival initiated by Clemens Wilhelm in 2011. Previously screening in Reykjavik, Helsinki, Glasgow, Amsterdam and Prague, amongst others, we are pleased to be able to add Helmsdale to this list.
