Timespan is a cultural development organisation and a creative hub based in Helmsdale, Sutherland in the North East Highlands of Scotland.
In our Memorandum and Articles our main purpose is defined…
To provide a resource for the presentation and promotion of heritage and arts, for the benefit of the public and particularly of the inhabitants of the parish of Helmsdale and the region of Sutherland, and to maintain a collection based on the built, natural and cultural heritage of the area; present a programme of contemporary arts; run activities for the education and enjoyment of arts and heritage.
Building on Timespan’s past we have created our programme based on an integrated cultural framework that enables Timespan to be Helmsdale’s cultural centre, a regional leader and a place of international relevance. We define our position as North.
From 2013-2018 we explore the Paradigm North through an annual theme. Starting from a locally relevant, historic topic we develop a multi-faceted annual programme of exhibitions, events and activities for everyone.
Cultural production is not only about preserving and creating artworks and artefacts; it is also about the production of discourse and the building of relationships around the work. We aim for what Wendelin van Oldenborgh has described as a ‘polyphonic’ approach: bringing together different groups who have expertise and an interest in the topic at stake to open up conversations and to create meaningful work that is educational and intriguing at the same time.
