On the change from volunteers to territorials in 1881, the County of Sutherland formed part of the Seaforth District and the famous 5th Seaforth Highlanders were born. It was these territorials that were called up to serve as regular soldiers when WW1 and WW2 broke out and formed part of the 51st (Highland) Division. Helmsdale’s fishermen were among the first to sign up for Naval duties and some joined the Merchant Navy and travelled all over the word. A few men joined the Royal Flying Corps, later to become the RAF. There were also many regiments for women, including the Auxiliary Territorial Service (ATS).
